Sciatica: Understanding and Managing Nerve Pain

Sciatica is a term used to describe a type of nerve pain that originates in the lower back and radiates down the leg. This pain is caused by irritation and/or compression of the sciatic nerve. Common causes of sciatica include herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease. Other factors that may contribute to the development of sciatica include prolonged sitting, being overweight, and wearing ill-fitting clothing or shoes.

Treatment options for sciatica include physical therapy, pain medications, and hot/cold therapy. In more severe cases, a doctor may suggest epidural injections or surgery. To prevent sciatica, it's important to maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, and avoid prolonged sitting. Additionally, maintaining proper posture and using good body mechanics can help to prevent the development of sciatica.
