The Latissimus Dorsi: A Journey from Pain to Healing with the JANMI Method

Latissimus Dorsi Muscle Anatomy

There’s an undeniable wisdom in the body, a quiet intelligence that tells us when something isn’t quite right. One of the most telling muscles in this regard, though often overlooked, is the latissimus dorsi. This broad, powerful muscle—our body’s “wings”—has been part of the human story from the very beginning. It’s a muscle that not only connects us to our evolutionary past but also speaks to our current struggles with back and shoulder pain, issues I’ve seen time and again in my practice. By understanding and respecting this natural intelligence of the body, we begin a journey—one that takes us from pain to empowerment, giving us a deeper understanding and control over our own bodies.

As I sit here writing, I can feel the grounding power of nature beneath me. It’s not just the earth; it’s the essence of what it means to be human. For me, healing isn’t about fancy techniques or cutting-edge science. It’s about connection—to ourselves, to nature, and to the more profound wisdom within our bodies. This belief is at the heart of the JANMI Method, an approach I’ve developed over years of experience working with muscles and fascia, but more importantly, an approach shaped by a deep understanding of what it means to live fully in our own bodies.

The latissimus dorsi tells a story of evolution. As we shifted from moving on all fours to walking upright, this muscle was central to our survival. It helped our ancestors climb, pull, and navigate the natural world. Over time, it adapted to support our upright posture, helping us lift and reach with power. But as our lives grew more complex, as we moved from nature to sedentary office chairs and hunching over screens, this muscle, once so vital, began to fall out of alignment with its purpose. Today, the latissimus dorsi is a muscle often trapped in dysfunction, creating lower back and shoulder pain that doesn’t just affect our bodies, but diminishes the quality of our lives.

The Weight of Modern Life on an Ancient Muscle

When I meet my clients, I often see the toll that modern life has taken on them—slumped shoulders, aching backs, and that constant, creeping tension that eats away at their well-being. It's the result of countless hours sitting at desks, leaning forward, shoulders pulled inward. The latissimus dorsi, which once powered us through life’s challenges, now finds itself compressed and neglected, weighed down by a lifestyle it was never meant for.

I remember a man named David, a 45-year-old who came to me with persistent shoulder pain that had started to radiate into his lower back. Like so many people, he couldn’t understand why, after months of stretching, therapy, and advice, the pain simply wouldn’t subside. His frustration was written all over his face. After a deep assessment, it became clear that the problem wasn’t isolated to his shoulder—it was his latissimus dorsi, a muscle that had been tight and overworked for years.

What many don’t realise is that dysfunction in the latissimus dorsi has a ripple effect. When this muscle tightens, it pulls on the spine, distorting posture and creating tension across the back and shoulders. This tension can cascade into more serious problems—rotator cuff injuries, neck pain, and chronic lower back pain. It doesn’t stop there. It can affect our mobility and quality of life, making even simple tasks, like reaching for something on a high shelf or lifting a weight at the gym, not just painful, but frustrating.

The JANMI Method: Reconnecting to Nature

The JANMI Method is built on a unique approach, combining technical expertise with a deep understanding of the body’s natural rhythms. What sets this method apart, though, is the way we reconnect to nature to restore balance. For me, healing doesn’t just come from the manipulation of muscles—it comes from grounding ourselves in the forces that shaped us in the first place.

In my personal preparation for treating patients, I spend time outdoors, barefoot, my hands in contact with the earth, moving through natural terrain in a way our ancestors once did. This practice isn’t just physical exercise—it sharpens my sensitivity to the body’s needs, allowing me to bring something primal and instinctive into my practice. Through movements like bear walks, crab walks, and push-ups on uneven ground, I reconnect with the earth, with nature’s energy.

I bring this energy with me into every treatment session. When I work with a patient, my touch is not just about fixing what’s wrong—it’s about restoring balance, using the energy of nature as a bridge to connect my patient with their own healing power.

With David, the journey wasn’t just about treating his pain; it was about realigning his latissimus dorsi with the rest of his body. We used myofascial release therapy, an essential part of the JANMI Method, to go deep into the fascia, the connective tissue that holds the muscles together. By releasing the tension in this tissue, the latissimus dorsi was freed to return to its natural function. The pain that had plagued his back and shoulders for years started to fade, and with it, his sense of empowerment grew. This transformation is what the JANMI Method is all about, offering hope and optimism for those struggling with back and shoulder pain.

But healing isn’t just about loosening a muscle—it’s about retraining it. Trigger point therapy, which focuses on releasing the knots deep within the muscle, goes to the heart of the pain and tension. For David, this combination of myofascial release and trigger point therapy was transformative. His posture improved, and the burden of pain he’d carried for so long was finally lifted.

Healing Isn’t Just Physical—It’s Emotional and Spiritual

There’s something profoundly personal about healing. It’s not just about fixing what’s broken—it’s about rediscovering the connection to yourself. That’s what the JANMI Method is really about: helping people find balance between their bodies, their minds, and the world around them. The latissimus dorsi, an ancient muscle that once played a key role in survival, still holds the key to finding that balance. When we realign this muscle, we realign ourselves—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well.

In my experience, treating the latissimus dorsi is not just about releasing a muscle—it’s about restoring harmony to the body. The JANMI Method is as much about the philosophy of movement as it is about therapy. It’s about reconnecting with the deeper rhythms that have shaped us over thousands of years and finding our place within that rhythm.

As you sit here reading this, I encourage you to reflect on your own body. Do you feel tension in your lower back or shoulders? Have you noticed how disconnected we’ve become from the natural movements our bodies crave? The JANMI Method is here to help you not only relieve pain but to reconnect with the natural rhythms that sustain us.

Let’s walk this path together, one step at a time, as we reclaim the wisdom of our bodies, rediscover our connection to nature, and, most importantly, find our way back to balance.
