Zoom heavy remote worker tension headaches and jaw bracing

Human neck and jaw anatomy

Dear reader,

If you work on video calls all day, there is a common modern habit your body learns very fast. It smiles politely on screen while your jaw quietly bites the stress in half.

This is the classic pattern I see in Marylebone. Tension headaches around the temples or forehead, a tight jaw, a stiff neck, and shoulders that feel like they are wearing a heavy coat.

Why it happens

Jaw tension is rarely only about the jaw. When you focus hard, your nervous system looks for stability. If your posture is slightly collapsed from sitting and your ribcage is not moving well, the neck works harder to hold the head. Then the jaw joins in as a stabiliser. It is efficient, but it is not kind.

Common tissues involved

The temporalis and masseter muscles can become overactive from clenching. The small muscles under the skull often tighten and feed headache pressure. The front and side neck muscles can feel ropey and protective. Upper trapezius and levator scapulae keep the shoulders lifted. When the ribcage is stiff, breathing becomes shallow and the whole upper system braces more.

The JANMI view

In JANMI Soft Tissue Therapy I treat this as an upper chain load sharing problem. Head pain is often the final alarm, not the original cause. The jaw, neck, shoulder blades, and ribcage work as one unit. If one link is stuck, the others compensate.

What a session focuses on

I assess the pattern first. Then I use precise soft tissue work to reduce overactivity in the jaw and neck area, and to improve how the scapula and ribcage support the head. The goal is simple. Less bracing, less headache pressure, and a system that does not need to clench to feel safe.

When to get checked medically

If headaches are new, unusually severe, changing quickly, or come with neurological symptoms such as vision changes, weakness, speech changes, fever, or waking you from sleep, speak with a GP or urgent care.
